Photo from 1981(Same as the photo in the main text, PanoraGeo-No.406) | 2015 Google Earth satellite image |
The image on the left was taken from an airplane from Belém to Manaus in June 1981, and the image on the right is a satellite image of Google Earth taken in December 2015. Over the past 35 years, the shape of both banks of the Amazon River has changed little. The most striking change is the expansion of Marinho Island, the southernmost of the three alluvial islands, that is, from the north (pictured above), Arco, Onças, and Marinho islands. It is thought that sediment generated by the erosion of Cape Remanso and other areas immediately upstream was carried in and caused the growth of this alluvial island. The fact that, on the island of Marinho, there are few dark green areas that indicate the presence of trees supports that the island is new.
